Safeware welcomes chemical experts to annual conference
Nottingham-based chemical software providers, Safeware Quasar Ltd, held their fourth annual regulatory conference on March 4th Nottingham, playing host to an audience of a size never before experienced at the event.
The conference, ‘Countdown to December 2010’ held at Eastwood Hall, Nottingham, welcomed regulatory experts and specialists for an in-depth discussion regarding the raft of new regulatory requirements due at the end of this year.
Playing host to 115 delegates from 10 different countries, this year’s conference had a real international flavour and representatives from chemical companies, formulators, retailers and regulatory consultants enjoyed a very lively and informative day.
The main focus of this year’s conference was assessing the impacts for downstream users on SDS’s and the associated ‘exposure scenarios’ that will need to be developed while other sections concentrated on global implementations of GHS/CLP, new Biocidal Product Regulations and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods, as well as the major new developments at Safeware Quasar Ltd.

The audience benefited from an impressive compilation of speakers to include an informative talk given by a representative from the UK’s competent authority, the Health and Safety Executive, Dr Pierre Cruse. This looked at the enforcement of CLP in the UK and provided an overview of the 3rd edition of the Purple Book and how and when these changes will be adopted in to CLP.
To endorse the already positive reputation Safeware Quasar Ltd enjoys, Alan Lewis, the Group Regulatory Conformance Director of Domino UK, gave a presentation talking about his 20 years of being a customer and how important the software is to ongoing plans to globalise Domino UK’s services.
Delegates also enjoyed a fantastic pre-conference dinner the evening before the event which gave everyone a great opportunity to network before the big day.
Simon Robinson from Safeware Quasar Ltd said: “The conference was a resounding success. My only disappointment had to be turning people away when the venue reached capacity.
“The quality of this year’s speakers was excellent, as was the quality of the questions raised by the delegates. It all made for a rich and interesting event.
“The chemical industry has discussed radical changes to the compliance landscape for many years. As we approach the ‘start’, the time has come for action, and companies realise that having a strategic plan is the key to survival in the regulatory jungle.
“The conference provided delegates with a concise summary of the current situation on emerging chemical regulatory developments from leading experts in their respective fields.”

Safeware Quasar experts to speak at high-status chemicals conference
Safeware Quasar’s Managing Director Hazi Mistry and Director Simon Robinson are proud to have been chosen to speak as experts in their respective fields at the 2nd International Fresenius Conference, discussing the implications of the new Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).
The two day ‘Implementing the GHS’ conference will take place in Cologne, Germany, on Monday April the 26th and Tuesday April the 27th. They will be joined by a host of influential, reputable and experienced chemical experts from across the world with an aim to providing clarity in relation to forthcoming regulatory changes.
GHS is a United Nations-backed initiative to standardise the laws around how dangerous chemicals are labelled and described globally. The conference will focus on providing an insight into several areas to include the transition to the new EU legislation, the practical issues, the impact on the consumer sector and an update on the global GHS situation.
During the conference, the audience will have the opportunity to benefit from Simon’s in-depth discussion using practical examples of regulatory compliance and hazard communication from the industry, while Hazi will give an informative presentation on appropriate IT solutions and computer software available.
Hazi said: “We are delighted to have been chosen to speak at this prominent conference, which we hope will provide a valuable insight into the likely changes to the regulations over the next few years.
“By standardising the labelling of dangerous chemicals and other hazardous materials, the GHS regulations should make life easier for producers and transporters, as well as improving safety for employees and anyone else who may come into contact with these products.”
GHS was implemented in the UK in January 2009, and has already been adopted in many countries around the world, while others will be doing so over the next year.

Palintest switch to SDS Professional
Palintest switch to Safeware Quasar’s SDS Professional as their preferred solution for classification and production of Safety Data Sheets.
Dr David Ellis of Palintest said: “We’d been having a bit of bother with the previous package we were using, and the Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor at another firm we work with had raved about Safeware.”
Palintest is a world leader in water analysis technology, and the company designs and manufactures products for monitoring water quality. Palintest required a classification system to validate, store and manage their incoming data as well as complete transportation documentation.
Dr Ellis goes onto say “The old package that was replaced by SDS Professional, didn’t have any way of doing the transport element – the DGSA had to calculate it all and send it to another department for review. Depending on what he was doing it could take a week to produce one sheet. Now the software allows us to do that in one go and its minutes rather than days to complete it.”
“We looked at a lot of packages and to be honest we were close to going with another one, but Hazi Mistry at Safeware organised a demonstration showing how their programmes worked and we were blown away by it.”
“The help and support we’ve had is fantastic. Safeware have fallen over themselves to help..”
Hazi Mistry Managing Director of Safeware commented “We have been approached by more and more companies who have been let down by their existing SDS software suppliers. We are finding these solutions either cannot keep up with the regulations or simply lack the in-depth regulatory expertise, especially with the introduction of CLP/GHS. Companies like Palintest are now switching to Safeware as the preferred supplier to ensure they can meet their current as well as future compliance objectives.”

Safeware Quasar partners National Chemical Emergency Centre
Chemical consultants and software company, Safeware Quasar, has teamed with the National Chemical Emergency Centre (NCEC) to supply them with specialist software for managing Safety Data Sheets.
Safeware Quasar’s software, My-SDS allows companies to effectively manage and store multi-lingual, inbound and outbound SDSs in a secure, centralised on-line system.
The product enables companies to manage and disseminate vital safety information over the internet for internal and external use, and can also be used to store Detergent Ingredient Sheets (DISs) and Technical Data Sheets (TDSs) in multiple languages. The NCEC were so impressed with the program’s capabilities that they are now using the system.
“My-SDS fulfils the legal requirements to submit data to the NCEC with the necessary index data and acts as a live feed for new or amended SDSs to be automatically issued to the NCEC for use in emergency response,” said Simon Robinson, managing director of Safeware Quasar.
“Our company is also working with the National Poisons Information Service (NPIS), as My-SDS provides an automated method for suppliers to send copies of new or amended SDSs to NIPS for inclusion in their internal toxbase database.”
“We aim to help companies comply with these fundamental regulations, and the fact that our software has been recognised by an organisation of national importance is tremendous praise for Safeware.”

Safeware Quasar launches innovative labelling solution
Chemicals software specialists Safeware Quasar have launched another innovative solution to help chemicals businesses rise to the challenge of the most sweeping changes to their industry in decades.
ChemlabelPro (CLP) was officially launched at Safeware’s 2009 User Conference earlier this month. The software is fully integrated with Safeware’s flagship SDS authoring solution, SDS Professional, or SDS Pro, which allows it to “map” regulatory approved data directly from SDS Pro’s database, without the need to rekey.; thereby ensuring the label is always consistent with the published SDS.
Advanced design features including “logic” based fields and the ability to use “generic” templates across multiple languages, enable organisations to reduce the number of label templates required, further reducing administration and operational cost.
The “Advanced” version includes support for touch screen environments where a mouse and keyboard might not be practical and also data replication for companies operating across multiple sites. All versions support colour printing as standard, which will become increasingly important as companies migrate to the United Nations’ Globally Harmonised System (GHS) for classifying and labelling chemicals.
GHS is one of a number of challenges facing the chemicals sector over the coming months and years. Others include the European Union REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) and CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) regulatory regimes.
Hazi Mistry of Safeware said: “I have never before experienced a period involving so many radical change within such a short timeframe.”
“A priority for every affected business must be to start planning its own individual roadmap to negotiating these changes. ChemLabel is another part of Safeware’s portfolio of support and solutions to help the chemicals sector achieve a co-ordinated, cost-effective transition.”
In conjunction with the launch of the new label system, Safeware are putting on regulatory workshops for companies wishing to review the regulatory changes and best practices for companies to effectively manage the changes and challenges faced.
